After School Care
After school care is provided at the school by a committee of the Fadden Primary School P&C Association.

Fadden Activity Centre is conducted by experienced child care workers, and exists not only to provide care for the children of parents in the work force, but also for those who need occasional out of school hours care, perhaps to give extra time for appointments, shopping, etc.

Children enrolled with the Activity Centre proceed directly to the After School Care area when dismissed from class, are checked in, have afternoon tea, and are then involved in art, craft and indoor or outdoor games or excursions, under the supervision of the coordinator and Centre staff.

Further information and enrolment forms, are available at the FAC webpage.

Absences from School
In the event of your child or children not attending school on any day, please call us on 6205 6011 before 9.30 am.  If we note your child is absent and we have not heard from you by 9.30am, we may call you at one or two locations: 1) home, or 2) work.

Whenever your child is absent from school we require a note to explain for this absence. If a prolonged absence is anticipated, notification of this would be valued. No child is permitted to leave the school or playground in school time without a note from parents. Your co-operation in adopting the following procedures would be appreciated:

  • If the afternoon absence is known in the morning, please send a note with the child.
  • If the afternoon absence is unexpected, please endeavour to telephone the school.

Where exceptional circumstances exist parents should contact the Principal.

Assemblies
Whole school assemblies are held fortnightly in the school hall commencing at 1.45pm.

Arrival at School
Please ensure children arrive at school in time to commence lessons at 9:00am. A late arrival is very disruptive and often your child will miss important announcements. Children should not arrive before 8:30 am as there is no staff supervision in he playground.

Attendance
Regular attendance is vital as it affects school work, social adjustment and attitudes to school. Absences can be a considerable handicap to a child’s progress. However, home is the best place for a really sick child. We do not have the facilities or staff to look after a sick child. In the event of a child becoming ill at school, or where a child is unfortunate enough to have an accident, you or your emergency contact will be informed. It is important that you complete the medical form and that all listed telephone numbers are current.

Ambulance Transportation
Students injured while under supervision at school or in a school-related situation are transported free of charge to the emergency section of either public hospital in the ACT. Parents and guardians of students who participate in excursions and other school trips outside the ACT should note that free ambulance transportation only applies in the ACT.

Parents and guardians are reminded to check their health cover for ambulance transportation outside the ACT.

B

Bicycles
Bicycle parking areas are out of bounds to children during the day. The school accepts no responsibility for the loss of bicycles or bicycle parts while they are left in the parking areas. For the safety of others, bicycles should not be ridden on the paths in the vicinity of the school during the quarter of an hour immediately prior to and after school.

Banking
Parent volunteers run a banking service. Books should be placed in the Banking box in the front foyer by 9.00 am on banking day. Books are returned via the child’s class on the same day.

C

Canteen
The school canteen operates from 9.00am – 1.00pm Tuesday to Friday and is run by a manager with help from parent volunteers. The canteen provides a variety of healthy food and drinks during recess 11.00-11.30am and lunch time from 1.00pm to 1.20pm.

Lunch orders are placed at 9.00am in the tubs provided in each class.

The Canteen Committee is a sub-committee of the P&C Association with at least five members and holds regular meetings to discuss roster organisation, fund raising, menu selection, purchases and finances.

Help in the Canteen or on the Committee is always welcome and any enquiries can be made by telephoning 6292 1709. Please note: The Canteen is closed on Mondays.

Class Placements
Wherever possible, students are placed in classes for the following year near the end of the previous year. This placement is carried out by teachers working as a team.

There will be both single and multi-aged classes as schools are staffed on the over all number of children and not the number of children at each year level.

Parents are encouraged to inform the Principal in writing should they have particular requests or concerns about class placements.

The placement of all students is at the discretion of the Principal within the parameters of the school’s philosophy.

Class placements at Fadden Primary School should provide:

  • classes which reflect the range of academic achievement
  • classes which reflect a balanced representation of chronological age and social maturity
  • classes which are reasonably balanced in representation of girls and boys
  • social grouping, which means each student has at least one friend with whom s/he works constructively
  • placements which take account of past placements, especially considering teacher/student/parents/sibling relationships.
  • Placements which take account of past staffing challenges such as staff changes

We have put together a set of guiding principals to assist with our decision making:

  • Social grouping-with at least one nominated friend
  • Balance of academic achievement levels across each class
  • Gender balance
  • Chronological age-maturity-balance
  • Not all new enrolments in one class

Counsellor
A school counsellor regularly visits the school. School counsellors are experienced teachers with skills and knowledge in psychology, assessment, counselling and guidance. They work jointly with teachers, administrators, parents and others from the wider community to promote the optimum development of every student.

The counsellor could be involved in the following:

  • Individual counselling – assisting students on a one to one basis in educational, behavioural, emotional and/or social problem solving
  • Parent consultation – making direct contact with parents regarding the specific needs of the child
  • Individual testing – providing assessment of students on a one to one basis
  • Special Needs Program – identifying and assisting with the placement and programs of students with special needs
  • Group counselling – assisting students in educational, behavioural, emotional and/or social problem solving in a small group setting
  • Staff consultation – consulting with staff members regarding student educational, behaviour special and/or emotional progress
  • consultation with other agencies – with parental agreement, referring students to other agencies coordinating delivery of services
  • If you wish to contact the school counsellor, contact the school which will be able to tell you when she/he is available.

Class Sizes

  • Kinder - Year 3 Cluster around 21
  • Years 4 – 6 clustering around 30

This is based on the Department’s staffing formula through which the school is staffed.

D

Dogs at School
Under Department of Urban Services policies, dogs are not permitted on school grounds.

Section 42 of the Act defines places where dogs are prohibited. These include the grounds of a child care centre, preschool, primary school, high school or secondary college during school hours or when school sport, including training, is being conducted unless the keeper of the dog resides in the grounds, or a dog is taken into the grounds with the approval of the principal.

There is a global ban on dogs on playing fields anywhere where sport or training for sport is being played.

Also dogs are prohibited within 10 metres of anything designed for play by children in a public place if children are playing on it; a fireplace designed for cooking food; or a swimming area defined by a sign erected.

Dogs will be impounded and transferred to the Dog Pound.

E

Emergency Contact
If a child becomes ill at school, or is injured, an effort will be made to contact parents immediately.

If parents cannot be reached the child’s emergency contact will be phoned. If this is also unsuccessful, the school will then obtain medical assistance if this is deeded necessary.

Excursions

Unit Camps and ‘Extended’ Excursions Fadden Primary School provides well-planned and integrated camping programs and ‘extended’ excursions for upper school (Years 5 and 6). Each activity is planned in close consultation with a senior teacher and is designed to continue and extend programs in one or more of the eight key learning areas.

The following considerations are raised with the teachers concerned:

  • How the activity fits into the teachers’ curriculum plan;
  • Parents’ ability to pay (ie. Some limit to the number of ‘costly’ activities);
  • Any specific hardship cases that require some assistance.

Day’ Excursions and Performances During the year teachers may organise half day or day long excursions for particular age groups. These excursions form an integral part of the learning program.

On occasions, again to complement our teaching program, we will arrange for visiting speakers or groups to perform at the school.

Details of times etc and a permission note will be sent home to parents for all excursions beyond the school grounds.

Payment Procedures for Excursions, Performances and Camps  All money for excursions, performances, camps, etc. should be placed securely in an envelope and clearly labelled and placed in the child’s unit box in the front foyer. Individual receipts will be issued for amounts more than $10. Alternatively, payment can be made through a family transaction statement which is sent home each term.

Ear-rings
For safety reasons, only stud or sleeper type ear-rings are permitted.

Equity Fund
To ensure access and equity in the provision of education, like all government schools Fadden has established an Equity Fund to support the needs of students who might not otherwise be in a position to take advantage of the opportunities provided by their school.

Enrolment Policy
Our school follows the ACT Department of Education and Training enrolment policy. Children must be five years of age on or before 30 April the year they enter kindergarten. For further information go to the Departmental Policy.

G

Gender Equity
Fadden Primary School aims to eliminate discriminatory practices and develop the self-esteem of all students.

Fadden Primary School provides both sexes with equal access to the full range of facilities and resources. The most recognised need is for equal access to teacher time and learning resources, classroom and playground space, sports skills learning and sports facilities. Curriculum, school organisation, resource distribution and the provision of a non-sexist library and text materials help to promote the self-esteem, aspirations and achievements of all students.

H

Homework
An important part of a child’s education is the carry-over of learning into his/her activities outside of the school setting. One way this can be done is through homework. The Fadden staff and school community believe that homework can be an important and valuable extension of classroom learning.

At Fadden we have a “developmental” policy whereby children start their school activities at home and gradually increase this responsibility from Kindergarten through Year 6.

Year Levels and Time per Week

  • Kindergarten -Some reading each day. Talking about and collecting items for class themes and news time.
  • Years 1 and 2 - 30 minutes
  • Years 3 and 4 - 1 hour
  • Years 5 and 6 – 1.5 hours

NOTE: Daily reading is a necessary part of homework, K – 6, in order to practice and develop reading skills and to read for pleasure.

For further information go to our Homework Policy.

Harassment of Students
The ACT Department of Education and Training requires its schools to have procedures for resolving cases of sexual harassment involving students. Alleged incidents of sexual harassment against children (by other children or adults) while under the jurisdiction of the school should be reported to one of the Sexual Harassment Contact Teachers. Their names are advised early each school year and displayed in all units. Harassment is dealt with under Fadden's Student Management Policy.

I

Immunisation
The ACT Department of Health advises that all children attending school in the ACT should be immunised against diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough, polio, measles, mumps, rubella and HIB (Haemophilus influenza type b). We would ask that you check your child's present immunisation status to see whether it is complete for his/her age. ACT Public Health regulations require schools to request proof of up to date immunisation when enrolling. Failure to provide this may result in your child being excluded from school should an outbreak of an infectious disease occur. A copy of exclusion periods for students with infectious diseases is available. Parents are asked to adhere closely to these requirements unless medical advice to the contrary is provided in writing.

Insurance
The school does not carry personal accident insurance for students. Parents are advised to take out their own personal accident insurance for their families.

Infectious Diseases and  Exclusion Period
The ACT Health Department has supplied the following information regarding the exclusion periods for the more common communicable childhood diseases. For further information go to the Departmental Policy on Infectious Diseases.

Internet and Information Technology Protocols – 2000
Fadden Primary School provides computer facilities to allow students and staff to access and use information sources for educational purposes, on a range of Electronic Communications Networks (ECN).

Access is conditional on users complying with rules outlined in the Fadden Information Technology Access Guidelines, Internet Protocol and the Acceptable Use Policy. Students will not be granted access to the Internet and e-mail until the Internet Protocol has been signed and returned. For further information go to Internet  Protocols.

L

Lost Property
Unclaimed belongings are kept in a container near the Canteen and may be checked at any time. Items remaining at the end of the school term are donated to charity. Small, valuable items such as money, watches and bus passes should be handed in and collected at the front office.

M

Music Program - Out of Hours
The Out-of-hours Music Program was initiated by a group of parents in 1989. It offers Fadden Primary School students the chance to learn a musical instrument after school hours, at the school. A sub-committee of the P&C Association employs professional teachers and offers classes in keyboard, recorder and guitar.

Medical Examination/Dental Clinic
With parental agreement children may be referred to a Government Medical officer for examination. The Dental Clinic operates from Monday to Friday. Contact the Tuggeranong Health Centre on 6205 2768 to arrange an appointment.

Management of Medical Conditions
The department is committed to providing a safe and healthy environment for students. While school staff have a duty of care to students to provide first aid assistance when required, parents will be aware that schools cannot be responsible for the general management of medical conditions.

In special circumstances, staff may be able to assist with the administration of medication. In these cases, departmental policy requires principals to ensure that a comprehensive written authority is obtained from the student’s parents and also seek from them a written statement from the student’s doctor authorising a member of staff to administer the prescribed medication Link to Departmental Policy on Administering Medication.

N

Newsletter
The Fadden Newsletter is distributed every Friday.

O

Open Plan Architecture
The Fadden Primary School building is architecturally open plan design with both fixed and movable partitions to allow flexibility in use. Generally open plan has come to describe schools lacking interior partitions. The degree to which the instructional space can be considered “open” depends on two factors; the size of the space and the use of partitions. Basically, space becomes increasingly open as the size increases and the use of partitions decreases.

Why Open Plan? One solution to the many pressures confronting teachers today and the many roles they are expected to assume is to use Team Teaching. Team Teaching is much easier to organise in the open plan situation.

Until recently in primary classrooms a teacher was expected to be all things to children, all day, all year. Increasingly in recent years the ideal of the primary teacher as the general practitioner displaying equal competence in all departments of the curriculum has taken a number of knocks. Some teachers are talented in music but less talented in maths, while others excel in the teaching of spelling but are less expert in teaching the arts. Team Teaching can combine the various talents of the teachers in a team to the benefit of the children.

Teachers in self-contained rooms have had varying results in their efforts to stimulate children but their success has been a testimony purely to their own ingenious methods and unlimited supply of energy and zeal.

Open plan and teaching teams are designed to cater more effectively for individual differences.

Open Plan and Open Education Open plan and open education should not be confused. Open plan is an architectural design which facilitates team teaching and other educational practices such as individualised learning, varied grouping of learners, and so on. Open education, however, is a particular philosophy of education. Fadden Primary School’s approach aims for a high level of contribution from both teacher and pupil.

P

Preschool/Primary/High School Liaison
Preschool to Kindergarten Program Fadden School encourages close liaison between the preschools in the priority enrolment area and primary school. The kindergarten year is designed to be a continuation of preschool experiences with English, Mathematics, Physical Education and Health, The Arts, LOTE, Technology, Studies of Society and Environment, and Science being incorporated into the program.

In late Term 2 and early Term 3 Caroline Chisholm High School conducts information nights for parents and children. These provide the opportunity to get an understanding of the programs and routines and if necessary have queries answered.

During Term 4, Year 6 make familiarisation visits to Caroline Chisholm High. During these visits the students are shown around the school and receive further explanations of programs and routines. They are encouraged to ask questions of the principal, Year 7 staff and high school students.

All necessary forms for Caroline Chisholm High School enrolment are distributed to Fadden children and can be returned to class teachers. Parents wishing to send their children to other high schools should approach the Principal of the chosen school to complete their enrolment procedures.

Parent Participation
With Your Child Parents are encouraged to make an appointment and come to the school to watch the Units at work and to discuss progress and/or issues concerning their child with their child’s teacher or with the Principal. The prospect for educational success of any student requires interaction between home and school which results in deep and sympathetic understanding between the two. This doesn’t mean just going along to parent meetings and joining in school activities. Although these are very important for our school, it also means that parents ought to be involved in what their children are experiencing. They should know about the school program and discuss school topics with their children. Parents who wish to assist their child with specific skills are encouraged to discuss this with the teacher to establish a constructive partnership.

With the School or the Units The school is eager to utilise the assistance of parents or others in the community willing to give some of their time for the benefit of the children. They may have special skills or interests or may assist in the Units or library under the direction of a teacher. This not only providing extra resource people for the school, but allowing the children to benefit by contract with a wider range of adults. Some training sessions for parents who wish to help children at school are held each year.

How can parents help? Parents are invited to assist in many different activities – in the classroom with music or hobbies, reading or Mathematics, in the library, in the canteen or with sport. However, these are only some of the areas where help would be welcomed. If you do not have spare time during school hours, many teachers would be grateful for any help you could give, eg. making teaching aids or processing and displaying written work.

How often are helpers expected to come? Your own timetable will determine when you can be available to help. Let the teacher know when you will be able to come to the school – some may come once a fortnight, others during a six-week period and others may be happy to come once or twice a week. Any time you can give is valuable and teachers will be happy to suggest activities which would best suit your schedule.

Help for the Helpers Teachers may hold training sessions to explain how their class is run or how parents can help with a particular course. Detailed guidelines for helpers are prepared for some programs. In addition, teachers are always happy to answer queries if you need further advice.

Requests for help in particular activities are often made in the school Newsletter. Please do not feel you need wait for such an invitation. Your child’s teacher will always be happy to talk with you about ways to in which you could assist.

Personal Belongings
Please mark clearly your child’s name on all personal belongings, including clothing.

Payment Procedures for Excursions, Performances and Camps
All money for excursions, performances, camps, etc. should be placed securely in an envelope and clearly labelled and placed in the child’s unit box in the front foyer. Individual receipts will be issued for amounts more than $10. Alternatively, payment can be made through a family transaction statement sent home each term.

R

Reporting Student Progress
Parents are to receive a written report twice per year, grading the student A (outstanding achievement) to E (very limited achievement). These reports are a national requirement.

Interviews with parents throughout the year will be set up as needed. These may occur at the request of the teacher or the parent to discuss a student’s achievement, behaviour management or other area of concern.

For further information got to our Reporting Procedures

Responsibilities of Students, Parents and Staff
The major goal of our responsibilities guidelines is that Fadden students, parents and school staff co-operate in providing a school environment and climate which assures the attainment of all others goals and objectives of an effective school. This includes the learning of basic skills in the academic realm plus the social skills appropriate to successive stages of emotional development.  For further information go to Responsibilities of Students, Parents and Staff

Record Folder System for Students
The ACT Department of Education and Training operates a Pupil Record Folder System which is obligatory for all public schools. Under this system a cumulative record is maintained from the time a pupil enrols in kindergarten until the completion of his/her ACT public schools career. This record may also contain some extracts from a short factual report compiled while the child is enrolled at an ACT preschool.

Further information on the Student Record Folder system may be obtained by contacting the School Principal, Deputy Principal or the School Counsellor.

S

Security at School
The school building is protected by a security system at night, weekends and during school holidays. Suspicious behaviour on school property should be reported to the police on 000 (urgent/emergency), 131 444 (attendance required but not urgent), 6239 7777 (routine enquiries).

Staff Allocation
The number of staff allocated to the school is determined by a formula administrated by the ACT Department of Education and Training and is based primarily on the number of children enrolled. A staff list is published in the School Newsletter early in the school year.

School Board
The School Board embodies the principle of collaboration between parents and staff, and community partnership in decision-making processes. Its members include three parents (one being the Chairperson), two teachers, a community representative and the Principal. Staggered two-year terms ensure continuity in the Board’s work. The Fadden Board encourages communication between the school and its community in determining the school’s budget, curriculum and education policies as well as its many needs in relation to buildings, facilities, equipment, funds and staff. Parents are welcome to attend any School Board Meeting and elected community members of the School Board can be contacted about school matters. The minutes of the Board Meetings are available from the Office.

Supervision of the Grounds
Teachers provide supervision in the school grounds (and sometimes, the Library) during recess and at lunchtime and at the school bus stop after school. In the mornings, children stay on sealed areas outside units. Use of bats or kicking games on sealed areas is not permitted at any time.

A number of staff are in classrooms each morning from 8.30 – 8.58 to deal with any emergencies. A roster teacher before school duties is displayed in each building – usually on the windows (including at the entrance to the school). Should a child require assistance, she/he should report straight to the teacher on duty (in their classroom/work area) or to the front office and ask for the teacher on call.

Children should not enter the units before 8.30 except by prior arrangement (such as band members, sporting teams, excursion groups). The Library opens at 8.40am and children are encouraged to use it.

You are encouraged not to send your child to school before 8.30am (unless they are members of the Breakfast Program) for their own safety. An arrival between 8.50 and 8.58 would be much appreciated. Arrival before 9.00 is essential for a settled, informed start to the day.

There is no supervision of play equipment before or after school. These areas are out of bounds before and after school. There is no supervision in the school grounds after 3.00pm and students should proceed home.

Should a child require assistance after school, she/he should report to the front office.

If children miss their bus, or parents are late, or children have problems immediately after school, they should go to the front office so that they may receive assistance.

Student Representative Council Meetings (SRC)
Each week a group of student representatives meets with a member of staff to discuss school matters and in particular to state the student view-point. The meetings have been very helpful in suggesting improvements and enabling the school to run more smoothly.

Students who have any school matters they wish discussed at these meetings should see their class SRC representative.

Sun Protection Policy
In accordance with the Department of Education and Training policy, Fadden Primary School has developed a policy based on the ACT Cancer Society’s Sun Smart Policy and Guidelines. The main features are as follows:

  • Hats and sunscreen are actively encouraged for all outdoor activity
  • A policy of “No hats, stay in the shade” is enforced
  • Where possible, outdoor activities are timetabled for the earlier part of the day
  • School hats are available from the Uniform Shop or the Front Office

For further information see our Sunsmart Policy

Sickness and Accidents
Sick children should be kept at home. If a child becomes sick at school the limited school first-aid facilities will be used until parents take the child home. If a child suffers a serious accident at school, parents will be notified immediately. Should emergency treatment be required the child will be transported by ambulance to a hospital.

Should a child require medication during school hours the following procedures should be followed for the safety of children and staff:

  • Parents write a letter to the Principal requesting assistance with medication, giving details. (Medication is to be forwarded with the request).
  • Medication is to be held in a secure place in the First Aid room.
  • Children are individually responsible for going to the Office Manager’s office for medication at the correct time.

Should your child catch chicken pox, mumps, measles or any other infectious disease, please contact the school for information about quarantine periods and to enable the school to warn other parents that their children may have been exposed.

T

Term Dates
The school operates on a four term system with holidays set by the ACT Department of Education and Training. Link to Term Dates

Transferring to Another School
When children are transferring from the school parents should contact the school at least one week prior to the move.

Toys
Children’s toys, unless specifically asked for by a teacher, should be kept at home. It is sometimes difficult for children to care for these properly at school and the chance of breakage is high.

U

Voluntary Contributions - Departmental Statement
For many years, students have benefited from the additional resources provided through voluntary financial contributions from parents, carers and other citizens. These contributions have assisted the school to conduct additional programs and activities and purchase educational material.

The School Board has suggested the following contribution will directly support the educational programs run by the school. This voluntary contribution may be made in full or in part or by instalments. These contributions have been used to purchase materials for used across the all KLA's as well as in the Library, Information Technology and Performing Arts.

Section 27 of the Educational Act 2004 clearly states that
a) each contribution must be voluntary
b) a child is not to be refused benefits or services because the child's parents do not make a contribution
c) a child is not harassed for contributions
d) any record of contribution is confidential.

Schools may offer to facilitate some specific optional items, activities and services for which parents may be required to pay if they want their child to access them. There are included in Schedule One of the Department of Education and Training’s Statement on Requesting Financial Contributions from Parents, which can be found at http://www.det.act.gov.au/policies/policies.htm.”

Voluntary School Board Contribution and Library Fund
Voluntary contributions may be paid annually or per semester. These funds provide additional facilities and materials at the school and directly benefit the children. The Library Fund is tax deductible.

Visits by Parents
We encourage parents and children to visit our school before the children are enrolled. By doing this we can explain our organisation and programs to you and help you to know how to best prepare your child for school. Information nights are held at the school in 2nd term and 4th term. At these nights aspects of the kindergarten program are explained. Day visits for children are arranged in Term 4 prior to commencing school.

Volunteering Schools
As per ACT Education Department policy, all parents/carers who volunteer in classrooms, at sporting events, on excursions or as drivers etc need to complete a Volunteers Form available from the Front Office. Volunteers must sign in and wear a volunteer badge each time they volunteer.

From time to time parents are asked to assist with the transportation of students to special events. Your assistance is appreciated. The the owner and/or driver is responsible for ensuring they carry the required driver’s licence, that the vehicle is appropriately registered and insured, is roadworthy, and that loading does not exceed the seat belt provision of the vehicle.
